What are file extensions?
A file extension is the usually three or four character “code” at the end of a file name that identifies what type of file it is. Commonly used file extensions include .DOC (Microsoft Word Document) and .PDF (Adobe PDF Document). While a file extension does designate the type of file, it doesn’t tell Windows what program should be used to open the file. If you have a .PDF file on your computer but you don’t have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, you will get a message box like this when you try and open the file:
Where does Windows store file extension information?
Windows stores information about file extensions in a special part of the Windows registry. This section in the registry keeps track of what each file extension is, and what programs are able to open it. Keeping the file extension data in the registry error free helps steer clear of file extension errors. If you want to be able to open files without incident, make sure the file extension part of the registry is kept healthy! Even if you have a compatible program installed for a file you want to open, if the file extension information in the registry is missing or damaged, Windows won’t know how to open the file.
What types of problems can be caused by damaged file extension information?
The most common type of file extension problem occurs when the “association” between a file extension and a program is damaged or accidentally deleted. The association tells Windows what program to open a file with. For example, a file extension association might tell Windows to open .PDF files with Adobe Acrobat Reader. If this were to get damaged, you would receive an error message when you tried to open a .PDF file because Windows wouldn’t know how to open it.
